A. 5-1 Three rotations with 3 front row hitters; three rotations with 2 front row hitters.

Advantages
a. Individualized instruction for one setter; can become more specific
b. Only three athletes need to know, understand, and implement game plan
c. One setter can better determine flow of the game, who’s hot, etc.

Disadvantages
a. If the setter has a bad game, your team could do poorly
b. There are three hitters but only 2 front row hitters

B. 6-2 The setter is always in the back row; three front row hitters are available at all times.

Advantages
a. There are always three eligible hitters
b. The team can utilize the best athlete to hit, pass and set (pass and hit in the front row, set in the back row)
c. Can swith to 5-1 very easily is need to

Disadvantages
a. Two setters must be trained instead of one
b. The hitters have to adjust to different setters
c. More practice time is needed to train athletes in each position

C. 4-2 The setter is always in the front row, two front row hitters are available

Advantages
a. The setter does not have to penetrate from the back row
b. Switching positions is very simple

Disadvantages
a. Two setters must be trained instead of one
b. The hitters have to adjust to differnt setters

Position Definitions

There’s a whole lot more out there than just normal pepper! A great warm up is to go through a rotation of the different peppers. Start a new pepper every minute. Mix it up by having players switch partners every minutes. Have a system of rotating partners in place so you don’t waste time between.

Basic Pepper -

Pass, Set, Hit back and forth with partners.

Hands Pepper –Pass, Set, Hit back and forth with partners. When hitting, hit a high, hard roll shot at partner’s forehead. Use hands to dig.

Middle hitter jumps with their hitter. (the middle hitter on the other side of the net should run a 1 tempo set, forcing the defense side middle hitter to commit and jump). When a middle hitter commits and jumps they will normally not have time to make it out to block with the right side. When this happens, they should come in low and plays tips.

Play Ball out with no rules or keep rules in place (only outside hits, 1/4 must be tips).

* Make it competitive . Keep track of points. Giver outside hitter 2 points for a kill on a tip.

One of the best things you can do to improve your block is to work on your footwork.
Basic Blocking Moves:

Side Step – Move one step to the left. Footwork: Left– Right. Reload. Keep hips square to net.
Short Pivot – to move right. Footwork: Pivot on ball of right foot. Hips open and face right. Plant feet — left, right to square hips back to net. Reload. (Change footwork to go to left).

Long Cross-Over – To move right. Footwork: Pivot on ball of right foot. Take big step with left foot. (cross-over step). Plant feet – right, left to square hips back to net.

Start a line of players on both sides of the net at the antenna. Have the first player of each line start square to net and do bloacking footwork along the length of the net. Have other players follow.

Start with just footwork and make sure they reset and reload every time they stop. Once footwork looks good and players are in control and look balanced, then add a jump.

Player starts at 10 ft line facing endline and coach.
Coach stands between endline and 10 ft line facing player
Coach slaps ball
Player turns and runs under net
Player turns and faces coach
Coach hits high ball at player to dig with hands
Coach should time hit so the player has little time to react once they turn around.

Servers on both sides of net in right back.

Servers serve to left back on other side of net. Left back passes, setter sets ball to passer, and left back passer hits a high outside set (or high middle set, 2 ball, if bad pass – audible out). Rotation – server goes to setter on SAME side of net. Setter goes to left back passing position on SAME side of net. After left back hits, shag ball and serve on opposite side of the net (will serve to the position they were just in) then go to setter position on SAME side of net . . . continue around the court.

To start and get warm: Servers start with a throw in front of the endline. As drill progresses and arms warm up they can start serving and moving back to behind endline. Hitters start with tips then progress to roll shots and then start swinging hard when arms start to warm up. (Make sure they hit down the line, not cross court to the other passers!)

Add a competitive twist – If you mess up the drill, you’re out shagging. Ex. bad serve, bad set, poor pass, hit out or in the net.
